This pre-service course provides a broad overview of the child welfare system. You’ll learn how the system works, who is involved and their roles and responsibilities, key terms, and goals of the system. A bonus section on supporting sibling relationships of children in care was added to the course in January 2021. Supplemental handouts round out the course.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • identify the primary goals of child protective services
  • understand how the child welfare system works
  • understand the stages a typical case follows
  • identify who is on a child's team and their responsibilities
  • know how to work as a team on behalf of a child
  • know best practices for siblings in the care system

This course reviewed the individual roles of each TEAM member, and stressed the importance of working together in order to protect the child. As indicated, we may sometimes experience differences of opinion on if a child should be reunified; however we must all work together to work out what's BEST for each child.

As the saying goes... "There is no 'I' in any team", however we need to remember that each memeber of the team has a voice, and we need to use it sometimes.

The take away is... Communication is key.

I felt the Team Members handout was the most helpful information included while completing this course. It helped in determining which team members were considered primary team members or secondary team members.
