FosterParentCollege.com® new release: Respaldar la normalidad

December 6, 2018

Eugene, OR — Historically, in an effort to protect an abused child from additional abuse, children in care have been denied such typical experiences as going to birthday parties or participating in school sports. While well-meaning, this denial robbed children of a "normal" childhood and limited their ability to develop life skills and social networks. Recently, thanks to the national efforts of foster youth alumni groups, a federal mandate was adopted to change this approach. The movement is known as "normalcy."

Earlier this year, FosterParentCollege.com released the online training course, Supporting Normalcy, to help resource parents provide normalcy for the children in their care. At the request of the states of Arizona and California—states with a substantial number of Spanish-speaking foster, adoptive, and kinship parents—FosterParentCollege.com has just released a Spanish-language version of this course, Respaldar la normalidad.

“We are committed to the well-being of all children in care,” said Lee White, president of Northwest Media, parent company of FosterParentCollege.com. “This means providing resource parents the information they need in a language they are comfortable learning in. Consequently, we have self-funded the translation of our English-language course Supporting Normalcy into Spanish.”

Supporting Normalcy/Respaldar la normalidad helps resource parents understand how to use the reasonable and prudent parenting standards to give their children opportunities for typical childhood experiences. By participating in these activities, youth have the opportunity to develop life skills, build resiliency, and create social networks.

For the past 14 years, FosterParentCollege.com has been providing web-based training to foster, adoptive, and kinship parents. Respaldar la normalidad joins 13 other Spanish-language courses on the website, along with over 50 courses in English. All courses are self-paced and viewable online at any time.
