Online Course Helps New Foster Parents Address Children's Physical Health Issues

September 17, 2018

Eugene, OR — It's common for children in care to have a chronic health issue, like asthma, obesity, or sleep problems. In order to receive the quality medical attention they need, resource parents will have to navigate the medical and child welfare systems. Children Entering Care: Physical Health Issues, the newest online course released by FosterParentCollege.com, will help parents understand the steps necessary to support a child with health problems.

General Physical Health
In this course, Dr. Robert Nickel, a developmental pediatrician, explores what foster, adoptive, and kinship parents can expect from their child's "medical home," what will happen in the initial health care visit, and the importance of follow-up visits for monitoring health problems and following the health care plan. “The child's doctor and medical home are partners in the care for the child,” explains Dr. Nickel. “And as a partner, the medical home will help the resource family in managing the child's health problems.”

After discussing the medical home and key health care visits, the course presents some of the common physical health issues resource parents can expect when a child joins their family, including basic steps to address each problem and preventive care.

Children Entering Care: Physical Health Issues joins over sixty other online courses offered by FosterParentCollege.com, which provides interactive web-based training designed specifically for foster, adoptive, and kinship families.
