Substance Exposed Infants is Available on FosterParentCollege.com®

May 3, 2010

Eugene, OR — Each year more than 400,000 infants are born in the U.S. who were exposed prenatally to controlled substances. Foster, adoptive and kinship parents face unique challenges when caring for these infants. The latest FosterParentCollege.com (FPC) course, Substance-Exposed Infants, sheds light on the physical and mental challenges these children face, gives an honest view of their long-term prognosis, and offers straightforward advice on nurturing these infants in a way that helps them thrive.

Dr. Robert Nickel, professor of pediatrics and developmental pediatrician; Susan Edelstein, MSW, executive director of TIES for Families/UCLA; and an experienced foster parent team up to debunk myths surrounding this topic. Discussions focus on the challenges faced by caregivers and how key parenting strategies can help insure a successful outcome for drug-exposed babies. This course covers the effects of legal and illegal drugs, risks and protective factors, medical and developmental issues, behavioral states, and working with the child's professional team.

Substance-Exposed Infants is available online at FosterParentCollege.com. Completing the class yields four training hours and costs $20. For more information about this class or to watch a short preview, visit fosterparentcollege.com or call 800-777-6636.

FPC is rated by the California Evidence-based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare, endorsed by the Foster Family-based Treatment Association and the Canadian Foster Family Association, and approved by CASA and the National Adoption Center.
