Frequently Asked Questions
Registration:
Do I have to have an email address to participate in FPC?
Yes. Your email address identifies your account. Also you will receive important information via email.
What if I don't have an email address?
You can create a free email account from several email service providers. Check with your internet provider, or get an account at www.Hotmail.com, www.Yahoo.com, www.Gmail.com, or others.
My spouse and I share an email address. Can we use that one email address for our FPC account?
No, each of you needs to have a separate account. You can create a free email account from several email service providers. Check with your internet provider or get an account at www.Hotmail.com, www.Yahoo.com, www.Gmail.com, or others.
I didn't receive the confirmation email after my registration.
The confirmation email is titled "Welcome to FosterParentCollege.com®." Check your junk mail folder. If you don't find it there, you can register again and make sure that you type in the correct email address. (Note: You don't need to have a "www." prefix before your email address.) If you entered the same address as you did last time, a message will tell you the email address is already in use. A link in the message allows you to send the confirmation/welcome message to your email address again. If you still do not receive the confirmation message after a while, send us a comment.
I registered myself but nothing happened. What happened?
You should have received a confirmation email from FPC that includes instructions and a confirmation code. If you did not receive that, make sure you typed your email address correctly. To correct it, just register again with the correct email address. Also, change your email spam filter, if you have one, to receive emails from FosterParentCollege.com®, SocialLearning.com, and NorthwestMedia.com.
I thought my agency registered me but I haven't gotten anything from them.
You should have received an email entitled "Welcome to FosterParentCollege.com®." It gives you a password, log in instructions, and tells you the number of training units you've been given. Check your email spam filter and make sure you can receive emails from FosterParentCollege.com®, SocialLearning.com and NorthwestMedia.com. Also, talk to your group administrator and make sure they have your correct email address.
What's the difference between agency-registered and self-registered members?
Many agencies purchase courses for parents, and register members into their group account. Those members receive a "Welcome" email from FPC with an assigned password and a designated number of training units, which they use to enroll in courses. Generally, these members will not have to pay for courses. Self-registered members enroll themselves and pay for the courses using their credit card.
My Account:
I signed up with my name but now I want to add my spouse's name to the account. Can that be changed?
For self-registered users, shared accounts are not available. If you are linked to an agency, then check with your agency to see if shared accounts are permitted. If they are, your agency can set it up for you.
What if my email address changes?
Log in with your old email address, click on the "edit account" button, then click on the "Login Email" edit option and follow the prompts to change your email address. You will be sent a confirmation email to the new address. You need to read and follow the instructions in that email to confirm the new address.
I forgot my password. Or the site says my password is invalid.
At the login screen, enter your email address then click "forgot?" You will be prompted with the hint - if you created one - or you can request a new password be emailed to you.

FPC does not keep track of passwords. If you belong to a group, you can also ask your group administrator to reset the password for you. Or you can call us to reset it.
How do I change my own password?
Once you log in, click on the "My Account" tab, then click on "Change My Password" and follow the prompts.
I tried everything and still can't log in.
If you are still having problems registering or logging in, send us a comment or call 800-777-6636 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Courses:
What's the difference between Self-Paced Courses and Advanced Parenting Workshops?
Self-Paced Courses include the 30-40 minute media presentation, review questionnaire, printable certificate, and printable course summary. Many courses also include printable handouts. You can watch these courses any time you want. They can be completed in one setting, or you can stop and come back to continue watching later on.

Advanced Parenting Workshops begin with the same media presentation as the Self-Paced Courses, then a hypothetical case study is presented. Participants work together, via an online discussion board, to understand the case study child's behavior and develop an action plan for the foster parents. Participants also answer questions individually and keep a private, online notebook. FPC staff monitor the postings and guide the discussions. Participants can begin a workshop at any time and have 30 days to complete it. The typical time commitment is 2 hours per week for 3 weeks. Advanced Parenting Workshops may be offered and monitored by FPC staff or your agency's staff.
How do I enroll in courses?
Easy! Log in, find the course you want, and click on the "enroll," "purchase," or "request" button. An "enroll" button is displayed when you can enroll in a course using prepaid training units. A "purchase" button is displayed when you do not have enough prepaid training units to enroll in the course, or are not allowed to use prepaid training units for that course. A "request" button is displayed if you are an agency-registered member without enough units to pay for enrollment in an Advanced Parenting Workshop. After clicking on the enroll button, follow instructions to complete your enrollment.
What if I change my mind about course selection?
You will always be prompted to confirm your selection. Once confirmed, however, the only way to "un-enroll" in a course" is by contacting FPC Support.
What is your Refund Policy?
On day of purchase: refund to credit card if you contact FPC during business hours by calling 800-777-6636 between
8:30am – 5:00pm, Pacific Time. After day of purchase: exchange only from one course to another of equal value. No refund or exchange on completed courses.
How do I begin a course?
From your Personal Home Page you will see the courses you have enrolled in under the "Current Classes" tab. Simply click on the title, then click "view course" and the course will immediately start playing. If the course does not begin, there may be a problem with your computer's settings. See System Requirements, or click "Send a Comment" for help from FPC Support.
How long can I access a course?
Once you begin a course, you have 30 days to complete it. You can watch any or all portions of the course as often as you like for 30 days, but you may not retake the questionnaire or receive another certificate of completion.
What is the Discussion Board and how do I use it?
Each course has a topic-related discussion board that is open to anyone who has enrolled in that particular course. From your Personal Home Page, click on the title of the course, then click "discussion board." To read messages that have already been posted, click on a discussion topic. Or, to start a new topic, click "start new discussion." You can visit this discussion board at any time, even after your course access has ended. To get to the discussion board for any of your previous courses, click "All discussion board topics" under your list of enrolled courses.
What are Handouts and how can I access them?
Some courses include documents that can be read and printed. From your Personal Home Page click on the title of the course, then click "handouts." Then click on the name of the handout. It will open in a separate window. You can print that document if you want.
Can I print other things from the course?
Yes, you can print the course summary ("Viewer Guide"), review questionnaire and your certificate. Once you complete the questions you will be able to print each of these items.
How many training credit hours will I receive for taking a course?
The number of training hours varies by course, with some courses (for example, the Advanced Parenting Workshops) providing more credit hours than others. The recommended training hours for each course are estimated from how long it takes to:

  1. watch the course completely
  2. read all handouts
  3. review sections you did not fully understand

Additionally, each certifying agency has a say on the number of hours that will be accepted. The actual number of training credit hours accepted for a course is at the discretion of each agency.
Technical:
Can I view FPC courses on my phone or tablet?
Yes, FPC's courses should be viewable on most modern phones and tablets. We've created a separate smartphone player to ensure the best viewing experience on small screens.
I am on a dialup Internet connection. Why does the course take so long to load?
We believe that visual, interactive and multimedia learning is far more effective than reading long pages of text. With this belief, our courses are built with rich multimedia content. We recommend high-speed Internet connections for viewing our courses. We have worked hard to optimize the courses so that they can be viewed via a dialup connection with reasonable download time. If dialup is your only option, please be patient. Another option is to use a computer at your local library. Libraries usually have high-speed Internet. You may need to take headphones to listen to our courses at a library. Your FPC account can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection.
The course does not load. The page says an error has occurred.
If all you see on the screen is the "remote control" on the left and nothing on the right in the viewing area, the most likely cause is that Javascript is disabled on your computer. See Enabling Javascript.

A slow Internet connection can also produce this problem. A good dialup connection will generally work okay, but it may be difficult or impossible to load our courses over a marginal dialup connection. High speed connections, such as DSL or cable, are recommended. Public libraries often offer access to computers with high speed Internet connections. If you don't have access to a high speed connection at home, consider taking FPC courses on the computers at your local public library. You may need to take headphones to listen to our courses at a library.

Any of the following circumstances may slow down your dialup or high speed connection, and should be resolved before taking FPC courses:
  1. Downloading other content while taking FPC courses.
  2. Spyware, adware, and other computer viruses.
  3. Line noise, interference, and (generally temporary) technical problems with your Internet connection.

A visit to our System Requirements page may help you identify other problems with your computer's configuration that could contribute to this problem.
The course starts to load or starts to play and then gets stuck.
This problem occurs when your Web browser software does not load the course material correctly. Clearing the browser's cache resolves this problem and should be tried first. See Clearing Your Browser's Cache for instructions.

The course plays, but there's no sound.
Audio volume problems can occur if speakers are not installed or are improperly installed, when one or more of the hardware or software volume controls is not turned up, or when the "mute" mode has been selected using any one or more of the hardware or software volume controls. Following are a few tips that may help you pinpoint the problem.

Is "Mute" On?

Check to make sure that none of the sound controls—including physical controls on keyboards and speakers and software controls such as the Windows volume control, typically accessible via a speaker icon in the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen—are set to mute.

Is The Volume Turned Up?

Check to make sure that the volume is turned up in all sound controls, including physical controls on keyboards and speakers, and also software controls such as the Windows volume control typically accessible via a speaker icon in the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen.

Are Speakers Installed, On, and Working?

Can you hear other multimedia played with the computer, such as videos on YouTube or music on iTunes? If not, and adjusting volumes and turning on the speakers doesn't solve the problem, consult a professional computer technician to assist you with the installation and configuration of speakers and sound settings.
Handouts are blank or will not open.
Handouts are published in Adobe Acrobat format, also known as a PDF document format. A free software program called Acrobat Reader is required to display Acrobat files.

The handouts cannot be opened if Acrobat Reader is not installed, or if the browser does not recognize the presence of the Acrobat Reader software, or if the Acrobat Reader software is significantly out of date.

To solve this problem, download and install the latest free version of Acrobat Reader from:
https://get.adobe.com/reader/

If you are using Google Chrome and still have issues after installing the latest Adobe Reader plugin then please Read About Chrome PDF Viewer.
