Children with Autism

Note: Some of the material in this course is out of date. It is based on the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-4) and explains diagnoses that are no longer used in the field. A replacement course based on the DSM-5 is currently being produced. Generally, this course discusses the challenges faced by parents of children with autism spectrum disorders

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • discuss the characteristic behaviors of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • describe the general recommendations for treatment and the professions that can support children with autism and their families
  • list the medical problems experienced by many children with autism
  • describe the next steps to obtain further information about autism
  • list behavioral strategies that parents can use with children with autism
